Sheriff Gary Hofmann proudly announced that the Queen Anne’s County Office of the Sheriff has been awarded the prestigious “Certificate of Accreditation” by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. CALEA states the Sheriff’s Office has fully demonstrated its voluntary commitment to law enforcement excellence by living up to a body of standards deemed essential to the protection of the life, health, safety and rights of the citizens it serves.

Major James Williams who serves as the Accreditation Manager further explains “Being awarded a Certificate of Accreditation means we have met specific standards of excellence and operates according to “best practices” by experts in the public safety field”.

Issues that the Office had to prove compliance include: proper use of force, fiscal responsibility, property management, disciplinary procedures, recruitment, selection and training, patrol operations, criminal investigation, handling of critical incidents and Homeland Security.

CALEA was created in 1979 as a private, non-profit organization in an effort to advance law enforcement professionalism. Standards were developed to increase public safety agencies capabilities to maintain order, agency effectiveness and efficiency in delivery of services, cooperation and coordination with other public safety agencies and citizen and employee confidence in the agency.

Sheriff Hofmann said  “Several years of work have gone into this process not only in written directives but an off-site review of standards by a team of assessors and then an on-site review of documentation. Employees were interviewed, building and vehicles were inspected and observation of employees both at headquarters and in the field. Comments were fielded from the public by written correspondence, in an open forum, telephone call-ins and media relations.”

It was noted by Major Williams that “the entire process took three years to accomplish with several deputies assisting in writing policies and directives. In order to prove compliance it took the cooperation of all agency personnel.”

Sheriff Hofmann in conclusion stated “It’s a great honor to be awarded accreditation status and that it is a testament to the professionalism of the Office of the Sheriff and our employees.”
